Négrette is a distinctive red grape variety most closely associated with the South-West of France, particularly the Fronton appellation near Toulouse. This grape produces wines with a unique aromatic and flavour profile, typically exhibiting an expressive bouquet of violets, liquorice, red and black fruits such as cherry and blackberry, accompanied by subtle peppery and spicy undertones. On the palate, Négrette wines are generally medium-bodied with soft, supple tannins and a refined freshness, sometimes displaying a hint of earthiness or minerality.
While Fronton is its traditional heartland, small plantings can also be found in neighbouring regions, including certain parts of the Loire Valley and, to a lesser extent, abroad. Négrette is predominantly used in the production of varietal wines or in blends, most notably with Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec, creating convivial reds that are approachable when young but can also show moderate ageing potential.
These wines pair beautifully with a range of dishes, especially local specialities such as duck confit, Toulouse sausage, and charcuterie. They also complement grilled meats, roasted poultry, mushroom-based dishes, and mild cheeses, making Négrette a versatile choice for food and wine matching.
