Viniou Reviews

Banyuls Grand Cru L'Étoile 2014 is a remarkable fortified wine from the sun-drenched terraces of Roussillon in southern France. Composed predominantly of Grenache Noir, as is tradition for Banyuls, this Grand Cru is sourced from old vines planted on steep schistous slopes overlooking the Mediterranean. The 2014 vintage benefited from a warm, dry growing season, producing grapes of exceptional ripeness and concentration. The wine is vinified using the méthode traditionnelle for vins doux naturels: fermentation is halted by the addition of neutral grape spirit, preserving the natural sweetness of the grapes, before a lengthy aging process in oak casks refines its structure and complexity. Classified as Grand Cru, this marks it as a wine of superior quality, aged for a minimum of 30 months to develop depth and nuance.

Roussillon’s viticultural landscape is shaped by its distinct Mediterranean climate, with hot, arid summers and mild winters. The region enjoys abundant sunshine, encouraging ideal ripening conditions. The rocky, schist-laden soils of the Banyuls vineyards yield small, intensely flavoured berries, while the cooling influence of sea breezes maintains freshness. The Banyuls tradition dates back centuries, with expertise passed down through generations, resulting in fortified wines famed for their richness, aromatic intensity, and longevity.

Banyuls Grand Cru 2014, with its deep garnet colour and aromatics of dried fruits, cocoa, roasted nuts, and spice, calls for strong food partners. Classic pairings include blue cheeses like Roquefort or Fourme d’Ambert. Its intense, velvety palate complements rich chocolate desserts such as a flourless chocolate cake or molten lava tart. For a local touch, try it with Catalan specialities like roast lamb with figs or duck breast with cherry sauce. It can also beautifully accompany a platter of dried fruits and nuts at the end of the meal.

To enjoy its full sensory expression, serve Banyuls Grand Cru slightly cool but not chilled, ideally at 14-16°C. Decanting is not strictly necessary, but allowing it time to breathe in the glass can open up its complex bouquet. This wine can be enjoyed immediately but also rewards further cellaring.
