Viniou Reviews

Antunović's Cuvée Graševina Tradition 2017 is an intriguing white wine hailing from the Slavonia region of Croatia. This wine is produced by the respected family-owned Antunović estate and focuses on the Graševina grape, which is also known elsewhere as Welschriesling—a variety that excels in continental climates. The 2017 vintage benefitted from classically warm, dry summers and cool nights in Slavonia, allowing for fully ripe grapes while retaining fine acidity. Antunović is known for attentive vineyard work and gentle vinification techniques, resulting in a wine that is vibrant, aromatic and elegant, with expressive notes of green apple, white peach, citrus, and a hint of white blossom. On the palate, expect a clean, dry profile with lively acidity, making it wonderfully refreshing and food-friendly.

Slavonia is one of Croatia’s premier wine regions, located in the country’s northeast. The area is defined by gently rolling hills, alluvial plains and a temperate continental climate. Cooling influences from the Drava and Danube rivers create optimal conditions for grape growing, particularly for white varieties like Graševina. The soils, mostly loam and clay with good drainage, contribute to the unique minerality often found in Slavonian wines. Winegrowing in Slavonia has a long tradition, dating back to Roman times; today, the region stands out for combining time-honoured practices with modern techniques, yielding wines that are both expressive and authentic.

For food pairing, the Graševina Tradition 2017’s fresh acidity and aromatic profile make it a perfect companion to light starters such as marinated anchovies, fresh goat cheese, or vegetable terrines. It pairs beautifully with white fish, shellfish, or grilled river fish—dishes native to the region such as fiš paprikaš (Danube fish stew) would be an excellent match. Its crispness also works well with chicken salads, asparagus risotto, or pasta primavera.

For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine well-chilled at 8-10°C. A medium-sized white wine glass will allow its aromatics to open gently. Pour and let breathe for a few minutes in the glass to allow the fresh fruit and subtle floral notes to come to the fore. This wine is singing now but could also be kept for a further two to three years if stored in good conditions.
