Šoškic’s Cuvée Sauvignon Taste of Terroir 2020 is a white wine that beautifully expresses the unique character of the Plešivica appellation in Central Croatia. Crafted from Sauvignon blanc, this wine emerges from a region renowned for its high-altitude vineyards and cool microclimate, resulting in a style that is both vibrant and nuanced. The 2020 vintage benefits from a relatively mild and balanced growing season, allowing the fruit to ripen fully while retaining fresh acidity. The estate, Šoškic, is committed to highlighting the natural essence of its terroir, favouring minimal intervention during vinification. This approach lets the varietal’s aromatic character come to the fore, typically revealing notes of elderflower, citrus, and subtle mineral undertones.
Plešivica itself is one of Croatia’s most notable wine-growing regions, positioned on the rolling hills just west of Zagreb. The vineyards lie at elevations between 200 and 400 metres, benefitting from a continental climate characterised by warm days and cool nights. This diurnal range is ideal for Sauvignon blanc, preserving aromatic intensity and zest. The soils are mainly marl and limestone, lending finesse and an elegant minerality to the wines. Plešivica has a long-standing wine tradition, with influences from both Central Europe and the Adriatic, resulting in a distinctive local style.
Given its lively aromatics and crisp palate, this Sauvignon blanc pairs exceptionally well with fresh seafood—think Adriatic scampi, oysters, or grilled calamari. Its freshness also complements goat cheese, asparagus risotto, and lighter poultry dishes. For a regional touch, try it alongside štrukli, a traditional Croatian cheese pastry, or a fillet of river trout with herbs.
To best appreciate this wine, serve it chilled but not too cold—ideally between 8 and 10°C. This will allow its aromatic complexity and mineral freshness to unfold beautifully in the glass. Decanting is not necessary, but enjoying it in a tulip-shaped white wine glass will enhance the tasting experience.
