The Almaviva EPU 2020 is a distinguished red blend from the renowned Maipo Alto appellation in Chile's Maipo Valley. Crafted by the celebrated Almaviva estate, EPU stands as the second wine to their iconic Grand Vin, yet displays its own unique character and refinement. This cuvée is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and occasionally Carmenère. The 2020 vintage benefitted from favourable weather conditions, allowing for optimal grape ripeness and resulting in a dense, complex wine. In the glass, EPU reveals deep ruby hues with enticing aromas of blackcurrant, plum, graphite, violet, and hints of cedar. The palate is structured and elegant, showcasing ripe tannins, fresh acidity, and well-integrated oak from the careful ageing process, hallmarks of Almaviva’s meticulous vinification.
The Maipo Valley is one of Chile's most prestigious wine regions, often called the “Bordeaux of South America”. Located just south of Santiago, Maipo Alto sits at the foothills of the Andes, benefitting from significant diurnal temperature variations and cool mountain breezes that preserve freshness and aromatic complexity in the grapes. The soils are predominantly alluvial, characterised by good drainage, gravel, and sand—ideal for cultivating structured, age-worthy red varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon. The region boasts a rich winemaking history dating back to the mid-19th century, when French varietals were first introduced.
EPU’s expressive yet balanced style makes it a versatile partner at the table. Classic pairings include grilled or roasted lamb, ribeye steak, duck breast, or game birds, where the wine’s depth complements the richness of the meat. For a local flair, try pairing with Chilean dishes such as pastel de choclo or a hearty beef empanada. It also works splendidly with mature, hard cheeses and earthy accompaniments such as mushrooms or lentils.
For optimal enjoyment, serve Almaviva EPU 2020 at 16-18°C. Decanting the wine for 1 to 2 hours prior to serving will allow its complex aromas and fine tannins to fully express themselves. This wine can be enjoyed now or cellared for up to a decade to allow further development in bottle.
