Montes’s Purple Angel 2021 is a renowned Chilean red from the Colchagua Valley in the Rapel Valley region. This iconic cuvée, crafted mainly from the Carmenère grape—supported by Petit Verdot—showcases the remarkable potential of this rediscovered Bordeaux variety in Chilean terroir. The 2021 vintage experienced favourable ripening conditions, allowing for an optimal balance between fruit expression, freshness, and structure. Hand-harvesting and careful berry sorting precede fermentation, often in stainless steel, followed by substantial ageing in French oak barrels, which imparts further complexity, smooth tannins, and well-integrated notes of spice and toast.
The Rapel Valley is one of Chile’s most celebrated wine regions, lauded for its Mediterranean climate and cooling Pacific influences funnelled up from the coast, especially through the Colchagua corridor. Mature hard cheeses and earthy mushroom dishes also find harmony with its depth and smooth tannins.
