Viniou Reviews

Rainer Wess’s 2022 Cuvée Ried Sandgrube white is a splendid reflection of Austria’s modern winemaking, particularly from the celebrated Kremstal DAC. As a dry white wine, its blend is likely based on Grüner Veltliner with possible contributions from Riesling or local varieties, typical of the region. 2022 as a vintage brought favourable conditions, with a warm growing season balanced by cool nights, allowing the grapes to achieve both ripe fruit character and vibrant acidity. The vineyard of Sandgrube is renowned for its loess soils, offering wines displaying both generosity and finesse, while vinification at Rainer Wess is handled with precision, preferring stainless steel to preserve aromatic purity and freshness.

The Kremstal DAC lies along the Danube, just west of Vienna, distinguished by its diverse soil mix and protective riverbanks. This area bridges traditions of classic Austrian winemaking with new energy. The cool continental climate, influenced by both the Danube and forested hills, offers significant diurnal range—preserving acidity and aromatic intensity. Historically, Kremstal has been a centre for viticulture since Roman times, but today’s wines, thanks to strict DAC regulations, emphasise clarity of style and origin.

With its bright, zesty profile and subtle mineral drive, this wine shines as an aperitif or with delicate starters. It is particularly excellent alongside freshwater fish—try it with grilled trout or char. Regional pairings such as Wiener Schnitzel, light salads with pumpkin seed oil, or a creamy asparagus risotto will highlight its subtle peppery notes and freshness. For cheese-lovers, a young Austrian goat’s cheese or a mild cow’s milk cheese matches well.

For an optimal tasting experience, serve this wine well-chilled, ideally between 8-10°C. Pour into medium-sized white wine glasses and allow a moment for the bouquet to express its charming citrus, orchard fruit, and gentle herbal notes. While delightful in its youthful exuberance, it may develop further nuance with a year or two in bottle.
