Mount Langi Ghiran’s Cliff Edge Shiraz 2019 is an outstanding expression of cool climate Australian Shiraz, hailing from the renowned Grampians region in Victoria. Crafted predominantly from Shiraz grapes, this cuvée embodies the estate's signature style, with fruit drawn from mature vines planted on granite-based soils at the foothills of Mount Langi Ghiran. The 2019 vintage benefitted from a warm, dry growing season followed by cool nights, which preserved acidity while fostering deep, concentrated flavours. This wine typically undergoes a combination of open fermentation and maturation in seasoned French oak, yielding refined tannins, vibrant dark fruit character, and the region’s hallmark peppery spice. The result is a medium-bodied red wine with lifted aromas of blackberries, violets and cracked pepper, complemented by subtle notes of liquorice and forest floor.
The Grampians region boasts a long and storied viticultural history dating back to the mid-19th century, and is celebrated for producing some of Australia’s most elegant and ageworthy Shiraz. The climate is distinctly continental, with warm days but markedly cool nights thanks to the elevation and proximity to the Great Dividing Range. This diurnal range, combined with ancient sandy loam and decomposed granite soils, contributes to finely structured wines with striking aromatics and a lingering, savoury finish. This unique terroir has established the Grampians as one of the country’s preeminent regions for cool climate Shiraz.
For food pairing, Cliff Edge Shiraz is wonderfully versatile. Its peppery lift and moderate body make it a terrific match for roasted lamb with rosemary, chargrilled beef, or game meats such as venison. The wine’s spice and acidity also pair beautifully with mushroom risotto, or regional Australian fare like kangaroo fillet and pepperberry jus. For cheese, try it with aged cheddar or Manchego.
To best appreciate its aromatic vibrancy and supple texture, serve this Shiraz at 16-18°C after a short decant to allow the complex bouquet to unfold. This wine can be enjoyed now or cellared for several years to evolved greater complexity.
