Viniou Reviews

Patrick Coonawarra Rouge is a fine expression of the celebrated region of Coonawarra in South Australia, although this particular cuvée is non-vintage. Coonawarra is particularly well-regarded for its red wines, especially those based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, and it’s likely that this red blend contains one or both of these varietals. The typically careful vinification in this area aims to preserve fruit purity and varietal expression, often combining modern stainless steel fermentation with ageing in French or American oak barriques to add complexity and structure, even in non-vintage blends.

The Coonawarra region is famous within Australia and globally, largely because of its unique terra rossa soils—a layer of rich, red clay over limestone—which provide exceptional drainage and impart a distinctive character to the wines. The climate here is maritime, tempered by breezes from the Southern Ocean, contributing to a long, cool ripening season. This allows grapes to develop rich, concentrated flavours whilst retaining fresh acidity, a balance beautifully achieved in Coonawarra reds. The region’s winemaking history dates back to the late 1800s and has since built an enviable reputation for producing some of Australia’s most sought-after red wines.

Coonawarra reds tend to be rich, full-bodied and fruit-forward, making them particularly suited to robust and flavourful dishes. For a classic pairing, enjoy this wine alongside grilled lamb chops with rosemary, slow-roasted beef brisket, or a hearty mushroom risotto. Regional South Australian specialities like kangaroo fillet or saltbush lamb would also work beautifully. The wine’s depth and structure complement aged cheeses—consider an aged cheddar or a local washed rind cheese.

For the best experience, serve Patrick Coonawarra Rouge at 16-18°C. Decanting for about half an hour before tasting will allow the wine’s aromas and flavours to unfold, showcasing the regional character and the thoughtful winemaking behind this bottle.
