Mtsvane is an ancient Georgian grape variety, renowned for producing fresh, aromatic white wines that reflect the rich winemaking heritage of the region. On the nose, Mtsvane wines are marked by enticing aromas of ripe green apple, pear, citrus blossom, apricot, and herbal undertones, often accompanied by hints of white peach and fresh herbs. The palate is typically lively and well-structured, with vibrant acidity, a medium body, and flavours of stone fruits, citrus zest, and subtle floral notes, sometimes complemented by a delicate minerality.
Mtsvane is primarily cultivated in Georgia’s Kakheti region, particularly in the Alazani Valley, where the climate and soils are ideal for expressing the grape’s varietal character. Traditional styles range from crisp and refreshing tank-fermented wines to complex skin-contact ‘amber’ wines made in qvevri clay vessels, which add layers of texture and nuanced earthiness.
These wines pair elegantly with a wide range of dishes, including grilled fish, roasted poultry, soft cheeses, and vegetable-based Georgian specialities such as pkhali and khachapuri. The vibrant acidity and aromatic profile also make Mtsvane an excellent companion for Asian-inspired cuisine, herbed salads, and light seafood preparations.
