Mavrotragano is an exceptional indigenous red grape variety from the volcanic soils of Santorini and other Cycladic islands in Greece. Renowned for its deep colour and complex bouquet, it offers an aromatic profile rich in ripe red and black berries, such as cherry, blackcurrant, and plum, complemented by notes of dried herbs, pepper, and hints of chocolate and tobacco. On the palate, Mavrotragano typically displays vibrant acidity, firm yet refined tannins, and a robust structure, leading to a lingering finish with mineral undertones reflective of its terroir.
It is primarily cultivated in Santorini, where the unique climate and soil composition contribute to its distinctive character, though small plantings exist in Paros and other Aegean islands. Mavrotragano is most often vinified as a dry red wine, showcasing its full-bodied personality, but also appears in some limited, sweet, late harvest styles. Its depth, aromatic intensity, and ageing potential set it apart among Greek reds.
Mavrotragano pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, beef stews, game dishes, and mature hard cheeses. Its structure and complexity complement Mediterranean cuisine, particularly dishes featuring herbs, roasted vegetables, or tomato-based sauces.
