Mavrodaphne is a distinctive red grape variety, native to Greece, predominantly grown in the Peloponnese region—most notably around Patras—and on the Ionian Islands. Its translated name, “Black Laurel,” hints at its deep, inky colour and the complexity of its aromas. On the nose, Mavrodaphne offers rich, fragrant notes of dried plums, blackberries, currants, and sweet spices such as cinnamon and clove, often complemented by undertones of cocoa, liquorice, and dried herbs.
Traditionally, Mavrodaphne is vinified into sweet, fortified dessert wines, notable for their velvety texture and luscious sweetness, balanced by lively acidity and subtle tannins. More recently, some producers have experimented with dry versions, showcasing the grape’s robust structure and spicy, dark fruit profile.
Classic Mavrodaphne dessert wines pair exceptionally with blue cheeses, dark chocolate, and spiced fruit cakes, while the drier styles complement roasted meats, game, and mature hard cheeses. The grape’s versatility and layered complexity have cemented Mavrodaphne as one of Greece’s most revered varietals, celebrated for both its historical legacy and modern adaptability.
