Vlachiko is an indigenous red grape variety primarily cultivated in the mountainous Epirus region of north-western Greece. This rare varietal is particularly renowned for its vibrant acidity and medium body, lending itself to the production of refined, food-friendly wines. On the nose, Vlachiko typically offers an alluring bouquet of wild red berries, cherry, and subtle floral notes, interwoven with earthy undertones and a hint of spice. On the palate, these wines exhibit fresh red fruit flavours alongside gentle tannins and a lively finish, sometimes accentuated by nuances of dried herbs and forest floor.
Vlachiko is most commonly found in the Zitsa appellation, where it is often blended with Bekari or used in mono-varietal expressions to highlight its unique character. Styles range from youthful, unoaked reds to more complex, barrel-aged bottlings with added layers of complexity. These wines are exceptionally well-suited to Mediterranean cuisine; they pair excellently with grilled lamb, roasted pork, mushroom risotto, and hard cheeses. The grape’s natural acidity and finesse also complement tomato-based dishes and charcuterie, making Vlachiko a versatile choice for a variety of dining occasions.
