Pinot Blanc is a versatile white grape variety renowned for its delicate yet expressive character. On the nose, it offers subtle aromas of white peach, pear, and apple, often complemented by hints of citrus blossom and almonds. The palate is typically light to medium-bodied, with fresh acidity and a soft, rounded mouthfeel. Flavours are elegant, ranging from crisp green apple and lemon zest to more refined nuances of stone fruit and gentle minerality.
Originally hailing from Burgundy, Pinot Blanc has found significant success in Alsace, where it produces some of its most notable examples. Outside France, the grape thrives in northern Italy under the name Pinot Bianco, and is also cultivated in Germany, Austria, and select cool-climate regions in the New World, including Oregon and Canada.
Pinot Blanc is vinified in various styles, from clean, unoaked versions accentuating purity and freshness, to richer, barrel-fermented wines showing subtle toast and cream. Sparkling wines and blends, particularly in Alsace and northern Italy, also showcase its adaptability.
Recommended pairings include delicate seafood such as scallops or white fish, poultry, light salads, and mild cheeses, where the wine’s freshness and understated complexity elegantly enhance the flavours of each dish.
