Lagrein is a distinguished red grape variety native to the Alto Adige region of northern Italy. Renowned for its deep, inky hue, Lagrein typically offers an expressive aromatic profile brimming with notes of ripe blackberries, sour cherries, violets, and subtle hints of cocoa and freshly ground pepper. On the palate, Lagrein displays robust tannins, lively acidity, and a full-bodied structure, culminating in a long, spicy finish that frequently reveals nuances of dark chocolate and earthy undertones.
While Alto Adige remains its principal home, Lagrein is also cultivated in pockets of Trentino and, on a smaller scale, in Australia and the United States. The grape is predominantly vinified as a varietal red wine, ranging from vibrant, fruit-forward styles suited to early drinking to more complex, oak-matured renditions with impressive ageing potential. Additionally, Lagrein is used to produce elegant rosato styles known locally as ‘Lagrein Rosato’ or ‘Kretzer’, recognised for their fresh red berry character and vivacious acidity.
Lagrein pairs excellently with hearty fare such as roasted game, braised beef, wild mushroom risotto, and mature hard cheeses. Its structure and acidity also complement rich, tomato-based dishes, making it a versatile choice at the table.
