Freisa is a red grape variety indigenous to the Piedmont region of north-western Italy, particularly prominent in areas such as Asti, Monferrato, and the hills surrounding Turin. It is closely related to Nebbiolo and produces wines that are characteristically aromatic, displaying pronounced notes of wild strawberries, raspberries, violets, and hints of rose petals. On the palate, Freisa wines are medium-bodied, with vibrant acidity and firm tannins, often complemented by underlying savoury and earthy nuances.
Freisa is remarkably versatile, vinified in a range of styles from dry (secco) to slightly sweet (amabile) and even lightly sparkling (frizzante). Some producers also craft more structured, age-worthy versions that showcase the grape’s complexity and potential for maturation. While traditionally crafted in a fresh, aromatic style, contemporary interpretations may include barrel ageing to enhance depth and texture.
Freisa pairs particularly well with regional Piedmontese cuisine. Its acidity and tannic grip make it an excellent match for cured meats, rich risottos, hearty pasta dishes, and mature cheeses. Additionally, the lighter, sparkling versions serve as a refreshing accompaniment to appetisers and charcuterie boards.
