Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is an illustrious red grape variety native to the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in north-eastern Italy, notably distinguished by its characteristically red stalks. The wines produced from this grape exhibit a deep, vibrant ruby colour and deliver an aromatic profile marked by notes of wild blackberry, sour cherry, plum, and subtle hints of herbs and dried violets; nuances of bitter almond and earthy undertones often linger on the finish. On the palate, these wines are medium to full-bodied, with lively acidity and robust, yet finely grained tannins, imparting both structure and ageing potential.
Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso thrives mainly in Friuli’s Colli Orientali and Grave areas, but is also found in some parts of Veneto and Slovenia. The typical styles range from youthful, fruit-forward versions to more complex, oak-aged expressions which develop spicy, balsamic, and savoury elements over time.
These wines pair remarkably well with a variety of dishes, such as game birds, grilled lamb, rustic pork sausages, and mature cheeses. The grape's acidity and grip make it particularly suited to regional Italian fare, including rabbit ragù, polenta-based preparations, and rich, tomato-based stews.
