Fiano is a distinguished white grape variety originating from the Campania region in southern Italy, particularly prevalent in the provinces of Avellino and Benevento. Highly esteemed for its aromatic complexity, Fiano wines typically present a delicate yet expressive bouquet, featuring notes of white flowers, honey, hazelnut, and ripe stone fruits such as peach and apricot. On the palate, Fiano is renowned for its medium to full body, crisp acidity, and mineral undertones, often displaying a distinctive waxy texture with flavours of citrus, melon, and occasionally a subtle smoky nuance.
While Campania remains the heartland of Fiano—best exemplified in the prestigious Fiano di Avellino DOCG—cultivation has expanded to Puglia and even to select vineyards in Australia. The grape produces a variety of wine styles, from fresh, unoaked examples ideal for early drinking, to more structured, oak-aged versions capable of developing added complexity and longevity.
Fiano pairs exceptionally well with seafood dishes such as grilled prawns or seared scallops, as well as poultry, creamy risottos, and fresh cheeses. Its vibrant acidity and textured palate make it an excellent choice for refined Mediterranean fare and light appetisers.
