The grape variety Loureiro

Loureiro is a distinguished white grape variety, primarily cultivated in Portugal’s Vinho Verde region, particularly along the Lima River valley in the northwest. Esteemed for its distinct aromatic profile, Loureiro offers an enchanting bouquet reminiscent of laurel flowers, from which its name derives, alongside refreshing notes of citrus blossom, green apple, and delicate garden herbs. On the palate, it presents a vibrant acidity balanced by a medium body, expressing flavours of grapefruit, ripe pear, and occasionally a subtle mineral undertone, leading to a crisp, lingering finish.

The grape is most commonly crafted into youthful, aromatic white wines that emphasise freshness and expressive florality. While traditionally vinified in dry or off-dry styles, some producers experiment with sparkling versions, taking advantage of its natural acidity and lively character. Loureiro-based wines are celebrated for their versatility at the table, making excellent partners for shellfish, sushi, grilled white fish, or soft cheeses. Lightly spiced Asian dishes and citrus-accented salads also harmonise beautifully, while the textural finesse of the wine complements creamy seafood risottos, enhancing the overall dining experience with its invigorating freshness.
