Alvarinho is a distinguished white grape variety renowned for producing some of Portugal’s most sophisticated white wines. Native to the Minho region, particularly around Monção and Melgaço in Vinho Verde, it is also grown in Galicia, Spain, where it is known as Albariño. Alvarinho wines are celebrated for their bright, zesty character and lively acidity. Aromatically, they typically display intense notes of citrus fruits such as lime and grapefruit, complemented by hints of peach, apricot, and subtle floral undertones. On the palate, Alvarinho offers a refreshing minerality balanced with flavours of green apple, pear, and occasional tropical nuances, finishing with a characteristic crispness.
The primary style of Alvarinho wine is dry and unoaked, emphasising purity and freshness, though select producers may experiment with lees ageing or gentle oak to add complexity. These wines often possess an impressive ability to age, developing richer textures and honeyed aromas over time. Alvarinho pairs exceptionally well with seafood, particularly oysters, shellfish, and grilled prawns, as well as light salads and goat’s cheese. Its vibrant acidity also makes it an excellent match for Asian dishes with aromatic herbs and gentle spices.
