Red Grape Variety

Limnio is an ancient Greek red grape variety, believed to have been cultivated for thousands of years, primarily on the island of Lemnos in the Aegean Sea, as well as in Macedonia and Thessaloniki. Renowned for its resilience to arid conditions, Limnio produces wines distinguished by their medium to full body and firm tannic structure. The aromatic profile is characterised by red and black fruits, such as cherry, raspberry, and plum, layered with subtle herbal, earthy, and occasionally spicy notes reminiscent of laurel and bay leaf.

On the palate, Limnio wines exhibit balanced acidity and a savoury, mineral-driven character. The varietal can be vinified as a single varietal wine but is also frequently blended with international or indigenous grapes to enhance complexity and depth. Typical wine styles range from fresh and fruit-driven to more mature expressions with oak ageing, resulting in nuanced flavours and a refined mouthfeel.

Limnio pairs excellently with Mediterranean cuisine, particularly grilled red meats, lamb, rich tomato-based dishes, and savoury cheeses. Mushroom risottos and herb-roasted poultry are also fine matches, allowing the grape’s herbal nuances and structure to complement a variety of flavours.
