Viniou Reviews

Baumgartner Weingut’s Cuvée Pinot Noir Grand Cru Edelblut 2022 from Aargau AOC is a beautiful expression of Swiss Pinot Noir. The 2022 vintage benefited from a temperate Swiss growing season, allowing for optimum ripeness and finesse. This Grand Cru cuvée showcases the estate’s most select parcels, with a careful hand in the vineyard and cellar. Made exclusively from Pinot Noir, it highlights the classic characteristics of the grape: a translucent garnet hue, delicate red fruit aromas of wild strawberry and raspberry, supple tannins, and an elegant, finely structured palate. The winemaking is focused on expressing purity, balancing fruit and refined oak support, with subtle spice and a mineral-inflected finish.

Aargau is a lesser-known but emerging Swiss wine region situated in the north of the country. Its vineyards benefit from a continental climate tempered by the proximity to the Jura mountains and the rivers Aare and Limmat, which help to moderate temperature extremes. The soils are diverse, with a notable presence of gravel, limestone and clay, ideal for Pinot Noir’s nuanced expression. While Swiss winemaking history is ancient, it is in recent decades that Aargau’s producers like Baumgartner Weingut have invested in quality, raising the profile of the region internationally.

This elegant Pinot Noir is highly versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with classic Swiss rösti topped with smoked bacon, delicately spiced Zurich-style veal (Zürcher Geschnetzeltes), or roast duck with redcurrant sauce. Try it as well with earthy mushroom risotto, grilled freshwater fish or a simple charcuterie plate featuring air-dried beef. Its freshness and finesse also make it a lovely match for mild alpine cheeses such as Tête de Moine or Tomme Vaudoise.

For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine at 14-16°C, allowing it a brief period to open up in the glass or decanter. This will reveal the full spectrum of its red fruit perfume and delicate earthiness, ensuring a refined Pinot Noir experience.
