The 2016 Mas La Plana from Torres is a benchmark Spanish red, crafted exclusively from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. This single-vineyard cuvée, produced in the heart of the Penedès DO, exemplifies both the international aspirations and the deep-rooted traditions of the Torres family. Working with low yields and a meticulous selection process, the estate employs carefully controlled fermentation and matures the wine in French oak barrels to achieve complexity and structure. The 2016 vintage is marked by expressive dark fruit aromas—think blackcurrant, ripe plum, and subtle hints of green pepper—underpinned by toasty oak, tobacco, and fine cedar nuances. Despite its power, the tannins remain well-integrated, lending the wine a sense of finesse and length.
Penedès, in Catalonia, is one of Spain’s most dynamic wine regions, straddling the Mediterranean coast and the inland mountains. The unique microclimates, ranging from coastal breezes to the cooler, higher altitude influences, foster excellent conditions for both indigenous and foreign varieties. The Mas La Plana vineyard itself is set on deep soils of limestone and clay, which grant depth and elegance to the wine. Established since the 1970s, this wine is now a legend, showing how Cabernet Sauvignon can thrive in Spanish terroir while reflecting the innovative spirit of Catalan winemakers—from their Cava sparkling heritage to world-class reds.
With its concentration and complexity, Mas La Plana shines alongside refined dishes. Classic pairings include grilled lamb cutlets or beef fillet with rosemary, as well as richly sauced game such as venison or duck. For a regional touch, try it with “canelons”—Catalan-style cannelloni—or aged Manchego cheese. Its structure also stands up beautifully to mushroom-based dishes or roasted root vegetables.
For an optimal tasting experience, serve this wine at around 17-18°C. Decanting for at least an hour is recommended to allow the bouquet to unfold fully. While already enjoyable, the 2016 Mas La Plana has the potential to develop further complexity over the next five to ten years if you wish to cellar it.
