The 2021 Cuvée Joven de Viñas Viejas from Goyo Garcia Viadero is an alluring expression of Ribera del Duero's old vines. This red wine typically showcases Tempranillo—locally called Tinto Fino—sourced from sustainably managed, low-yielding plots, though Goyo is known to blend in small percentages of traditional varieties like Albillo or Garnacha to enhance complexity. Ribera del Duero, stretching along the Duero River in north-western Spain's Castille and León, is celebrated for its extreme continental climate. The high vineyards, often over 800 metres above sea level, grow on soils of clay, sand, and limestone, yielding grapes with concentrated flavours and fine tannins. The appellation itself has a rich winemaking legacy dating back to Roman times, but its transformation into a world-renowned region was cemented in the late 20th century, with an emphasis on quality over quantity and respect for old vineyards like those championed by Goyo Garcia Viadero.
