Cuvée Ermita de San Lorenzo 2018 from Bodega Hermanos Sastre is a compelling red wine crafted in the celebrated Ribera del Duero DO, located in Castille and León, Spain. This wine, primarily made from Tempranillo (locally known as Tinto Fino), showcases the deep intensity and complexity characteristic of the region. The 2018 vintage benefited from optimal ripening conditions, resulting in a wine of profound aromatic complexity, structured tannins, and a balanced profile. Typically, winemaking here involves careful hand harvesting and ageing in French and American oak, which imparts layers of spice, toast, and vanilla to the vibrant dark fruit flavours of black cherry, plum, and blackberry.
Ribera del Duero is one of Spain’s premier wine regions, stretching along the banks of the Duero River at an average altitude of around 800 metres. The climate here is continental, marked by hot summers, cold winters and considerable diurnal temperature shifts, which help the grapes develop robust flavours while retaining lively acidity. The soils are a varied mix of clay, limestone and alluvial gravel, contributing to both the power and finesse of the wines. Viticulture in Ribera del Duero dates back over a millennium, and the appellation is now internationally recognised for producing some of Spain’s finest red wines.
Cuvée Ermita de San Lorenzo 2018’s layered richness and substantial structure make it a classic partner for robust dishes. Traditional Spanish cuisine such as roast suckling lamb (lechazo asado), grilled Iberian pork, or slow-cooked oxtail (rabo de toro) would pair beautifully. Alternatively, seek out mature Manchego cheese, grilled wild mushrooms, or even dishes with roasted red pepper and olive oil. Internationally, try with grilled ribeye, duck breast, or rich beef stews.
To best appreciate its complexity and aromatic depth, serve this wine at 16-18°C. Decanting for about an hour before tasting is recommended to allow the wine to open up and fully reveal its expressive bouquet and layered palate.
