Viniou Reviews

Boekenhoutskloof’s “The Chocolate Block” 2012 is one of South Africa’s iconic blends, hailing from the ruggedly beautiful Swartland within the greater Coastal Region. This red blend typically combines Syrah (the dominant variety), Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and sometimes a hint of Viognier, though percentages vary by year. The 2012 vintage was marked by cool nights and warm days, ensuring a slow, well-balanced ripening that granted depth, freshness, and complexity to the final wine. The wine is matured predominantly in French oak, lending it its signature polish, structure, and the eponymous chocolatey undertones layered with ripe dark fruits, baking spices, violets, dark cherry, and a savoury herbal edge. The palate shows refined tannins, generous fruit, and a lingering, velvety finish.

The Swartland region has risen to global prominence for its old bush vines and minimal-intervention philosophy. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, arid summers and cooling breezes from the Atlantic. Its soils—a complex mix of granite, schist, and ancient alluvial deposits—encourage deep root systems, low yields, and exceptional concentration in the grapes. Traditionally overlooked in favour of Stellenbosch, Swartland’s revival is driven by exciting winemakers harnessing these unique conditions, resulting in wines of character and individuality. The region’s history in wine stretches back to the 17th century, and today it is celebrated for crafting full-bodied, expressive reds.

This wine shines with robust cuisine. Consider pairing it with braised lamb shoulder, grilled ribeye steak, or a rich oxtail stew. South African dishes like bobotie or smoked springbok can echo the blend’s spiced, savoury notes. For a vegetarian option, try roasted aubergine layered with lentils and North African spices. Hard cheeses such as mature cheddar or Comté will also complement its depth.

Serve The Chocolate Block around 16-18°C to enjoy its full aromatic complexity and textural richness. Decanting for 30-60 minutes will help the wine unfurl its bouquet, especially given its age and intensity. This wine offers a wonderful opportunity to explore South Africa’s contemporary excellence in winemaking.
