Opened 28.8.2025. Red and black fruit at the first nose, later also leather notes. On the palate well balanced, tannins are well polished, balanced acids. Perfect with steak.

Viniou Reviews

The Asara, Cuvée The Bell Tower 2016 from Stellenbosch is a captivating red blend that showcases the rich characteristics of South African viticulture. This vintage exudes a deep, robust colour with a multi-layered bouquet. Though the exact blend of grape varieties is unspecified, it likely includes key staples such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and perhaps Shiraz or other varietals common to the region. The wine is vinified in a style that honours both tradition and the modern technological advances available to South African winemakers, resulting in a complex and refined profile that reflects its terroir.

Stellenbosch, part of the coastal region of South Africa, is a viticultural heartland where the climate and soil types contribute significantly to the production of exceptional wines. The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters, moderated by the proximity of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The soils in Stellenbosch are predominantly rich in granite, with areas of shale and sandstone, providing excellent drainage and minerals that give the wine its unique character. The winemaking history here dates back to the late 17th century, steeped in tradition yet embracing modern innovation, making it one of the most esteemed wine regions in the country.

When considering food pairings for this sophisticated red, think of dishes that match its depth and savoury elements. Grilled meats, such as beef or lamb, complement the wine's structure, while game meats like venison or duck will echo its complexity. Rich stews or cassoulets are also excellent companions, and for a regional touch, South African braai, with its smoky and spiced flavours, makes a perfect match.

For optimal enjoyment, decant the Asara Cuvée The Bell Tower 2016 about an hour before serving to allow the flavours and aromas to fully develop. The ideal serving temperature is between 16-18°C, which will ensure that its full bouquet and palate come through perfectly.
