Paul Clüver’s Cuvée Village Pinot Noir 2023 hails from the acclaimed Elgin region in the South Coast of South Africa. Crafted solely from Pinot Noir, this vintage is shaped by a cool-climate terroir, with the grapes benefitting from gentle ripening conditions that preserve aromatic purity and finesse. The winemaking approach at Paul Clüver emphasises minimal intervention, allowing the grape’s natural delicate character to shine through, while maturation in French oak brings subtle spice and structure without overwhelming the fruit. The 2023 vintage displays a beautiful translucent ruby colour, with expressive aromas of red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry, complemented by hints of earth and rose petal. The palate is light to medium-bodied, boasting juicy red fruit, fine tannins, and a vibrant acidity that adds freshness and length.
The Elgin Valley is renowned for its unique microclimate, influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding mountains. The altitude, cool temperatures, and ample rainfall provide an extended growing season, ideal for cultivating Pinot Noir. The soils, composed primarily of decomposed sandstone and clay, lend complexity and an elegant minerality to the wines. Elgin is a relatively young but dynamic wine region, having made its mark in recent decades thanks to the dedication of pioneering estates like Paul Clüver, who have elevated the reputation of South African Pinot Noir on the global stage.
Given its bright fruit and subtle complexity, this Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with a range of dishes. It shines alongside roasted duck with cherry sauce, or with a wild mushroom risotto where the earthy notes of the wine and food combine harmoniously. Traditional South African fare such as Karoo lamb chops, simply grilled, also provides a satisfying match. For a regional touch, consider serving with ostrich carpaccio or springbok loin.
To appreciate its fragrant bouquet and delicate structure, serve this Pinot Noir slightly cool, at around 14-16°C. A Burgundy glass will help concentrate the aromas. Allowing the wine a short period to breathe before serving can further enhance its subtle complexity. This wine can be enjoyed now in its vibrant youth, or will reward cellaring for several years to come.
