Dolfo’s Cuvée Reserve Merlot 2018 from Goriška Brda in the Slovenian Littoral region is an expressive red wine drawing from the unique intersection of Mediterranean and Alpine influences. This 100% Merlot, or predominant Merlot cuvée, is shaped by moderately warm summers and relatively mild winters, resulting in a slow, balanced ripening of the grapes. The 2018 vintage enjoyed a favourable growing season, which is reflected in a wine that offers both generous fruit and poised structure. Expect aromas of ripe black cherry, plum, and subtle notes of violet and spice, with hints of tobacco and dark chocolate derived from careful ageing, likely in French oak barrels.
The Goriška Brda appellation is the pride of Slovenian winemaking: a hilly region bordered by Italy’s Friuli, it combines flysch soils (a mix of marl and sandstone) and steep slopes, ensuring excellent drainage and concentration in the fruit. Viticulture here dates back to Roman times, but modern producers like Dolfo balance tradition and innovation. The Brda microclimate, with its optimal sun exposure and cool nights thanks to nearby mountains, creates wines of fine acidity and aromatic depth – hallmarks of quality Merlot from this area.
