Edi Simcic’s Triton Cuvée 2020 hails from the Goriška Brda, often considered the jewel of the Slovenian Littoral. This white blend typically unites noble varieties such as Sauvignonasse (Friulano), Chardonnay, and Rebula, reflecting the complexity of its terroir. The 2020 vintage continues the estate’s reputation for meticulous vineyard work and expressive winemaking, with careful hand-harvesting and fermentation in temperature-controlled conditions, often maturing in oak to enhance structure and longevity. The result is a wine that displays both aromatic complexity—think ripe stone fruits, acacia blossom, citrus zest—and a textured palate underpinned by lively acidity and a subtle, elegant minerality.
Goriška Brda itself is Slovenia's answer to Friuli across the Italian border, sharing its rolling hills, sunny sub-Mediterranean climate, and Ponka soils—marl and sandstone that contribute finesse and depth to the wines. The area enjoys warm days, cooling Alpine breezes at night, and significant rainfall, which together ensure a long, harmonious ripening process and preserve the wines' freshness. There’s a centuries-old tradition of winemaking here, shaped by both Italian and Slovenian influences. The region is increasingly recognised for its innovative producers, with Edi Simcic long at the forefront.
For food pairing, the Triton’s richness and structure make it exceptionally versatile. Locally, it would shine alongside dishes such as frtalja, a traditional herb omelette, or Jota, a hearty bean-and-sauerkraut stew. Internationally, consider pairing with baked sea bass, creamy risottos, or roasted poultry with tarragon. The wine’s acidity and texture also stand up well to mildly spiced Asian cuisine and soft cheeses like Robiola.
To enjoy its aromatic nuances and layered palate, serve the Edi Simcic Triton 2020 at 10-12°C. Decanting for a short while will allow the wine to open up further. It will evolve beautifully over several years, developing more honeyed and toasty tones as it ages.
