Cricova’s Codru Cuvée Cabernet-Sauvignon 2024 represents a modern expression of Moldovan winemaking, particularly from the celebrated Codru region. While Cabernet Sauvignon is likely the primary grape, the wine is best approached for its stylistic qualities: expect a deep ruby colour and an aromatic profile suggestive of blackcurrant, dark cherry, subtle green pepper, and a touch of cedar or spice. The 2024 vintage is very young, which often means lively fruit, firm tannins and fresh acidity. The vinification at Cricova, one of Moldova’s most historic underground wineries, typically emphasises clean, varietal expression and a balanced structure suitable for early enjoyment or short-term cellaring.
Codru is Moldova’s largest and perhaps most prestigious wine region, renowned for its moderate continental climate. Here, cold winters and warm summers are moderated by dense forests and rolling hills, creating an ideal setting for slow grape maturation and aromatic development. The soils are rich in limestone and chernozem (black earth), which provide excellent drainage while retaining enough nutrients to support healthy, flavourful fruit. Moldovan viticulture in Codru is deeply rooted, with ancient traditions dating back thousands of years and a more recent renaissance focusing on quality dry reds.
For food pairing, this Cabernet-Sauvignon style wine is highly versatile. It pairs wonderfully with grilled or roasted meats, such as lamb chops, beef steak or duck breast. Traditional Moldovan dishes like “sarmale” (stuffed cabbage rolls) or “friptură” (roast pork) complement its robust character. It also works beautifully alongside mature cheeses, mushroom stews or even rich tomato-based pasta dishes.
To enjoy this wine at its best, serve it slightly below room temperature, ideally at 16-18°C. If opened young, consider decanting it for thirty minutes to allow the aromatics and texture to fully develop. This will help soften the tannins and unlock the expressive fruit and spice character of the wine.
