Viniou Reviews

Le Difese 2022, crafted by Tenuta San Guido, is an emblematic red wine from the prestigious Tuscan IGT appellation. This cuvée brings together predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese grapes, emblematic varieties that offer the freshness and structure of Bordeaux blends with the vibrant, ripe fruit and acidity of Tuscany’s indigenous Sangiovese. The 2022 vintage benefited from a temperate climate, allowing for even ripening and resulting in a wine brimming with youthful energy. Vinification follows the estate’s tradition, with stainless steel fermentation and a maturation period in French and American oak barrels, bestowing subtle notes of spice and smooth tannins without overshadowing the fruit-forward character.

Tuscany, one of Italy’s most storied wine regions, is celebrated for its rolling hills, sun-soaked vineyards, and diverse soils, ranging from rich clay to limestone and schist. These unique terroir elements contribute to the vibrancy and depth of its wines, with the coastal influence near Bolgheri (where Tenuta San Guido is situated) lending a further dimension of freshness and minerality. Historically, this is a land where innovation meets tradition, especially at estates like San Guido, pioneers of the famed “Super Tuscan” movement that challenged conventional blending rules and elevated the region’s global reputation.

Le Difese’s accessible style and balanced structure make it a versatile companion at the table. It pairs harmoniously with classic Tuscan dishes such as pappardelle al cinghiale (wild boar pasta), grilled Florentine steak, or aged pecorino cheese. Its supple tannins and juicy red fruit also work beautifully with roasted vegetables, lamb chops, or Mediterranean-inspired ratatouille, while its freshness stands up to tomato-based sauces and hearty stews.

For optimal enjoyment, serve Le Difese 2022 at 16-18°C. Decanting for half an hour before tasting will help the wine open up, revealing its textured palate of cherries, plums, subtle herbs, and a hint of spice. This is a wine that can be enjoyed young for its vivacity, or cellared for a few years to allow further integration and complexity.
