Viniou Reviews

The 2016 Mille e una Notte by Donnafugata is a flagship red from Sicily, crafted as a blend that typically features the island’s star grape Nero d’Avola, complemented by international varieties such as Petit Verdot and Syrah. This cuvée is produced from meticulously selected grapes grown at the Contessa Entellina estate, benefiting from careful vine management and a vinification process that includes temperature-controlled fermentation and ageing in French oak barriques. The result is a complex, full-bodied wine, marked by deep ruby colour, intense aromas of ripe black fruit, balsamic notes, hints of spice, and fine tannins that promise graceful ageing. The 2016 vintage stands out for its balance, concentration and remarkable freshness, highlighting the meticulous craftsmanship behind this wine.

Sicily, and more specifically the Sicile IGT appellation, offers a unique viticultural environment due to its Mediterranean climate and diverse soils, which range from clay and limestone to volcanic compositions. The hot, dry summers and significant day-night temperature variation help develop grapes with expressive aromatics and robust structure. Historically, Sicily is one of Europe’s oldest wine-growing areas, with a heritage stretching back to Phoenician and Greek settlements. In recent decades, producers like Donnafugata have driven a renaissance in quality winemaking, showcasing indigenous and international grape varieties in innovative blends.

Food pairings for this sumptuous Sicilian red can include richly flavoured meats such as slow-braised lamb shanks, beef stew, or ossobuco. Traditional Sicilian dishes like involtini di melanzane (aubergine rolls) or a hearty caponata work well, as do aged cheeses such as pecorino or caciocavallo. The wine’s complexity and structure make it versatile for a range of Mediterranean-inspired cuisine.

For optimal enjoyment, decanting is recommended to allow the aromatic bouquet to fully unfurl. Serve between 16-18°C to appreciate the layers of fruit, spice, and elegant tannins. This wine can be enjoyed now or cellared for several years to further develop its tertiary notes.
