Viniou Reviews

Poderi Aldo Conterno’s Barbera d'Alba “Conca Tre Pile” 2021 is a fine expression of this well-loved Piedmontese grape. Predominantly 100% Barbera, the wine hails from carefully selected old vines planted within the Conca Tre Pile vineyard, renowned for its particular position and calcareous clay soils. The 2021 vintage benefited from ideal weather conditions, producing grapes with optimal ripeness and balance. In the cellar, the wine is traditionally vinified with careful temperature control and undergoes an ageing period in French oak barrels, lending it both aromatic complexity and a subtle touch of vanilla and spice. In the glass, you can expect a deep ruby hue, vibrant aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, and plum, underpinned by hints of violet and incense. The palate is supple yet energetic, with a beautiful freshness balancing the wine’s generous ripe fruit, supple tannins, and moderate acidity.

The Barbera d'Alba denomination is at the heart of Piedmont, a region famous for its rolling hills and patchwork of boutique vineyards. The continental climate, marked by cool nights and warm, sunny days, favours slow, even ripening of Barbera grapes which is reflected in their expressive fruit character and lively acidity. Calcareous and clay-rich soils typical of the Alba zone contribute to wines of depth and structure. With a long-standing tradition of family estates and a strong focus on quality and terroir expression, Alba has earned its place among Italy’s most celebrated viticultural areas. The history of the region and the expertise of producers like Aldo Conterno come together in wines of great harmony and ageing potential.

When it comes to food pairings, Barbera d'Alba is remarkably versatile. It pairs beautifully with the rich, earthy cuisine of Piedmont such as tajarin pasta with porcini mushrooms, agnolotti del plin, or braised veal in Barolo. The wine’s fresh acidity also complements tomato-based dishes, grilled sausages, roast pork, or a simple herbed chicken. It can even provide a delightful contrast to firm, aged cheeses like Castelmagno. For vegetarians, try it with stuffed aubergines or wild mushroom risotto.

For the best tasting experience, serve this Barbera d'Alba at a temperature of 16-18°C. Decanting for 30 minutes will allow the wine to fully reveal its aromatic and textural complexity. Enjoy over the next 5 to 7 years to appreciate its development in the bottle.
