Cagliero’s Barolo DOC Cuvée Ravera 2020 is a splendid expression of one of Italy’s most celebrated red wines. Crafted entirely from the Nebbiolo grape, this wine showcases the variety’s remarkable capacity for both power and finesse. The 2020 vintage, from the acclaimed Ravera cru, benefits from a favourable growing season, offering balanced ripeness and refined tannins. The wine is typically fermented in stainless steel, followed by a lengthy maturation in large oak casks, which enhances its structure while respecting the purity of fruit and the signature spicy, floral aromas Nebbiolo is known for. Expect classic notes of rose petal, dried cherry, violets, anise and leather, with a firm backbone and an impressive lingering finish.
Barolo hails from the heart of Piedmont, a region nestled at the foot of the Alps in northwestern Italy. The local climate combines sunny days and cool nights, contributing to the grape’s slow, even ripening and the wine’s distinctive complexity and ageing potential. The calcareous clay soils of the Barolo zone, particularly in the Ravera vineyard, impart elegance and a pronounced mineral character to the final wine. This region has centuries-old traditions in viticulture and is globally acclaimed for producing some of the finest, long-lived reds in the world.
Barolo’s intensity and structure make it an excellent partner for rich, savoury dishes. Traditional pairings include Piedmontese specialities such as brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo), tajarin pasta with white truffle, or agnolotti del plin. It also complements mushroom risottos, aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Grana Padano, and game such as venison or pheasant.
To enjoy Cagliero’s Cuvée Ravera at its best, serve it slightly below room temperature, ideally at 16-18°C, and consider decanting for an hour or two to allow the complex bouquet to fully develop. This wine can be enjoyed now or cellared for further evolution over the next decade.
