Prunotto’s Barolo DOCG “Vigna Colonnello” Riserva Bussia 2018 is a truly exceptional expression of Nebbiolo, the singular red grape variety behind all great Barolo wines. This Riserva, hailing from the prestigious Bussia cru, is the result of meticulous selection and extended ageing. The 2018 vintage delivered wines of notable freshness, with a slower ripening leading to pronounced aromatic complexity and elegant tannins. The Nebbiolo grapes, grown on calcareous-clay soils, are hand-harvested and gently pressed before fermentation. After long maceration, the wine is aged for an extended period in large oak casks, followed by additional bottle ageing, allowing its structure, depth, and nuance to fully evolve.
Barolo, in the heart of Piedmont, is revered as one of Italy’s most iconic wine regions. The hills around the village of Barolo have a unique combination of climate and soils—mainly calcareous marls—with warm days and cool nights supporting long ripening of Nebbiolo, yielding wines of exceptional perfume and longevity. The region’s viticultural history dates back centuries, but its reputation was cemented in the 19th century when Barolo first emerged as the “King of Wines”. The Bussia cru, in particular, is known for producing some of the region’s most powerful and complex Barolos.
This Barolo Riserva’s refined power and aromatic depth makes it an ideal partner for rich, flavourful dishes. Consider pairing it with classic Piedmontese fare such as brasato al Barolo (beef braised in red wine), wild mushroom risotto, or truffle-infused tajarin pasta. It is also superb with game meats, slow-cooked lamb shank, or aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano and Castelmagno, matching the wine’s firm tannic backbone and earthy, floral character.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine at least an hour before serving to allow its bouquet to unfold. Serve at 17-19°C in large glasses to fully appreciate its complex aromas and silken texture. This is a wine built for contemplation, with the potential to evolve beautifully over many years in your cellar.
