Barolo Baudana Luigi Baudana 2016 is a compelling red wine, expressing the unique character of the Nebbiolo grape, the sole varietal permitted for Barolo wines. The 2016 vintage is widely considered one of the standout years for Barolo, offering excellent structure and longevity. Grown on the prized vineyards of Serralunga d’Alba, the Baudana estate is situated on complex soils of clay and limestone, contributing to the wine’s depth and minerality. The vinification respects traditional methods, with extended maceration and maturation in large oak casks, allowing the Nebbiolo’s aromatic complexity and robust tannins to integrate harmoniously over time.
The Piemonte region, nestled in the north-western part of Italy at the foothills of the Alps, is celebrated for its foggy autumns – “nebbiolo” itself stems from “nebbia”, meaning fog. The continental climate, with significant diurnal temperature variation, ensures slow ripening and optimal phenolic development. Soils are predominantly calcareous clay, imparting finesse, structure, and longevity to the region’s wines. Piemonte’s rich viticultural tradition dates back centuries, and Barolo stands as its “king of wines”, highly regarded for its elegance and power.
Barolo’s assertive tannins, firm acidity, and complex bouquet of rose, tar, red cherry, truffle, and earthy undertones make it a fine companion to rich and hearty dishes. Classic pairings include braised beef such as Brasato al Barolo, osso buco, game meats like venison, or wild mushroom risotto. Local aged cheeses, particularly Castelmagno or Parmigiano Reggiano, also complement Barolo’s structure beautifully.
For optimal enjoyment, decanting the Barolo Baudana Luigi Baudana 2016 for at least two hours is highly recommended to reveal its aromatic complexity and soften its tannins. Serve between 17 and 18°C to appreciate the full spectrum of flavours and aromas. This wine offers great ageing potential, but is already rewarding to drink if approached with patience and care.
