Viniou Reviews

The 2011 Barolo DOCG cru Mondoca Dardi from Angelo Germano is an outstanding example of traditional Nebbiolo winemaking from the heart of the Piemonte region. This vintage, crafted exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes grown in the prestigious Mondoca Dardi vineyard in Monforte d’Alba, is a testament to the complexity and aging potential intrinsic to Barolo. The 2011 season was characterised by a warm growing cycle, encouraging ripeness and yielding wines with rich fruit, supple tannins, and captivating aromatics. The vinification follows classic practices: extended maceration and maturation in large Slavonian oak casks, which imparts both structure and an elegant integration of oak nuances without overshadowing the varietal’s identity.

Piemonte, nestled in the north-west of Italy at the foothills of the Alps, boasts a unique terroir of calcareous clay, marl, and sandy soils that bestow Barolo with its characteristic minerality and depth. The continental climate, with significant diurnal temperature variation, promotes slow, steady ripening—crucial for Nebbiolo’s aromatic development and tannic structure. This region’s centuries-old viticultural heritage has established its Barolo as the “King of Wines,” revered for both its power and finesse.

Pairing food with this Barolo is a delight, as its expressive bouquet of dried rose, violet, tar, and truffle combines exquisitely with hearty cuisine. Classic Piemontese dishes such as brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo), tajarin al tartufo (egg-rich pasta with truffles), or wild mushroom risotto would be superb partners. Mature cheeses like Castelmagno or Parmigiano-Reggiano also harmonise well, as do game meats or rich lamb preparations, which can handle the tannic grip and earthy undertones of the wine.

For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least two hours to allow it to fully express its bouquet and textural nuances. Serve at 17-18°C to highlight its balance between fruit, tannin, and acidity, making sure not to overchill or overheat so as to preserve its elegance and aromatic integrity.
