Viniou Reviews

Poderi Rosso Giovanni’s Barbera d’Asti Superiore Gioco dell’Oca 2018 is a superb expression of Barbera from the heart of Piedmont. Crafted from carefully selected Barbera grapes, this red falls under the Piemonte DOC but embraces the Superiore designation, denoting extended maturation and higher quality standards. The 2018 vintage benefits from an excellent growing season. After manual harvest, the grapes are likely vinified in stainless steel to preserve freshness before ageing, often in large oak barrels or tonneaux to lend structure and subtle spice. In the glass, one can expect vibrant ruby hues, aromas of wild cherries and plums, and a nuanced palate of ripe berries, bright acidity, and a touch of sweet spice, culminating in a lingering and harmonious finish.

The Piedmont region, nestled in north-western Italy, is renowned for its undulating hills and patchwork of small, family-run vineyards. Barbera thrives in these ancient soils, composed of clay and limestone, which lend both richness and elegance to the wines. The continental climate, with warm days, cool nights, and frequent morning fog, allows the grapes to ripen slowly, enhancing aromatic complexity and naturally high acidity—qualities that define classic Barbera. Piedmont’s deep-rooted wine culture and focus on traditional methods combine to create reds that pair wonderfully with local cuisine.

Gioco dell’Oca’s vibrant acidity and medium-bodied structure make it a versatile companion at the table. Traditional Piedmontese dishes such as agnolotti del plin (tiny stuffed pasta), vitello tonnato, or tajarin with truffles will find a perfect partner in this wine. Its supple fruit and gentle tannins also work beautifully with roasted game, cured meats like bresaola, or earthy mushroom risottos. Try it alongside chargrilled sausages, mature cheeses, or a simple pizza with cured ham for a more relaxed meal.

Serve this Barbera d’Asti Superiore at 16-18°C in a generous glass to allow its aromatics to open. Decant for up to half an hour if possible, especially if the wine has been cellared, to best appreciate its depth and vitality. This 2018 is drinking beautifully now but can gracefully age for several more years.
