Massimo Rivetti’s 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Serraboella is a distinguished red wine from the revered Piedmont region of Italy, specifically crafted under the Piemonte DOC appellation. This cuvée typifies the Barbaresco style, made from Nebbiolo grapes grown on the historic Serraboella hill, a plot renowned for its complex soils and generous exposure. The 2014 vintage in Piedmont was marked by cooler temperatures and plentiful rainfall, which led to a refined expression of Nebbiolo, with excellent acidity, fine tannins and a precise aromatic expression. Traditionally, Barbaresco Riserva undergoes extended ageing in large oak barrels, which helps to polish the wine’s structure and allows tertiary notes to emerge alongside the fresh fruit and floral perfumes that Nebbiolo is famous for.
The Piedmont region, nestled in the northwest of Italy at the foot of the Alps, is famed for its undulating hills and patchwork of microclimates. The Serraboella terroir, in particular, boasts calcareous-clay soils, providing both excellent drainage and mineral complexity—key elements in developing the depth and longevity found in this wine. Piedmont’s temperate climate, with cold winters and warm summers, allows for a slow and gradual ripening of Nebbiolo grapes, promoting nuanced aromas and a balance between power and finesse. With centuries of winemaking tradition, the region’s commitment to quality is embodied in producers like Massimo Rivetti, whose wines marry history with modern precision.
Given its structure and aromatic profile, this Barbaresco Riserva partners superbly with robust dishes. Regional classics such as brasato al Barolo (beef braised in red wine), agnolotti del plin (stuffed pasta), or roasted game will echo the wine’s depth and accentuate its earthy, truffly undertones. Mature cheeses such as Castelmagno or hard Parmigiano also make excellent companions.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least an hour to allow its bouquet to open. Serve at 16-18°C to reveal its intricate layers of cherry, rose petal, and forest floor without masking the finesse of its tannins. Enjoy now or cellar for further development, as this wine has the potential to age beautifully.
