Viniou Reviews

G.D. Vajra’s Barbera d’Alba Cuvée Superiore 2023 is a vivid expression of one of Piedmont’s most cherished grape varieties. Crafted solely from Barbera, this wine shines a deep ruby in the glass. The 2023 vintage exhibits lively freshness—a hallmark of Barbera—with enticing aromas of ripe red cherry, black plum and a subtle hint of violet. The palate is round and juicy, supported by vibrant acidity and finely integrated tannins, giving the wine verve without heaviness. Vinification at G.D. Vajra is meticulous, focusing on gentle extraction and careful ageing in large neutral oak casks, which preserves the grape’s natural fruitiness while bestowing added depth and structure to the Cuvée Superiore.

The Piedmont region, and Alba in particular, is the spiritual home of Barbera. Nestled at the foot of the Alps, this area is blessed with a temperate continental climate: cold winters and hot summers, moderated by cooling mountain breezes. The soils are rich in clay and limestone, providing vitality and complexity to the wines. Barbera from Alba expresses a unique balance between fruit intensity and energetic acidity, a style that has made it a favourite at local tables for centuries. The G.D. Vajra estate, family-run since its inception, is renowned for its traditional approach and respect for biodiversity, further enhancing the authenticity of its wines.

In terms of food pairings, this Barbera d’Alba is versatile enough for rustic as well as refined cuisine. Its bright acidity and moderate tannins make it a wonderful companion to Italian classics such as agnolotti del plin—tiny pasta parcels filled with meat—or a hearty risotto al Barolo. Roasted poultry, savoury pork dishes, and grilled sausages also harmonise beautifully. For a regional touch, pair with vitello tonnato or a mushroom tajarin pasta, whose umami richness matches the wine’s character.

For optimal tasting, serve this wine at a cool room temperature, ideally between 16 and 18°C. Decanting for half an hour before serving will help the wine unfold its aromatic complexity, especially while it is still young. This Barbera d’Alba can be enjoyed now for its vibrant fruit, but a couple of years in the cellar will bring added nuance if you prefer a more evolved profile.
