The 2015 Roagna Barolo Pira is an exemplary expression of this prestigious appellation from Piedmont, northern Italy. Produced exclusively from Nebbiolo, the hallmark grape of Barolo, this cuvée is sourced from the historic Pira vineyard in Castiglione Falletto. The 2015 vintage was characterised by a warm and sunny season, resulting in optimal ripeness and structured tannins. The Roagna family is known for its traditional approach: long macerations, wild yeast fermentation, and extensive ageing in large, old oak barrels, which allows the subtle complexities of Nebbiolo and the terroir to shine through. Upon tasting, the wine reveals a captivating bouquet of dried roses, tar, truffle, and red cherries, interwoven with hints of liquorice and tobacco. On the palate, it is both powerful and elegant, with finely grained tannins and a lingering finish that denotes great ageing potential.
Barolo emerges from the rolling hills of the Langhe, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The soils here are primarily calcareous marl with some sandy and clay elements, offering excellent drainage and imparting finesse and aromatic complexity to the wines. The region’s continental climate, with hot summers and cold, foggy autumns, promotes slow and even grape maturation. Barolo’s winemaking heritage dates back to the 19th century, and its wines are widely considered among Italy’s greatest, embodying the culture and tradition of the area.
This powerful red finds its most harmonious matches alongside robust dishes. Traditional Piedmontese fare such as brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo), tajarin al tartufo (egg-yolk pasta with truffle), or agnolotti del plin (meat-filled pasta) complement both the wine’s richness and its earthy aromatics. Roagna Barolo Pira also pairs beautifully with roasted game, mature cheeses like Castelmagno, or even wild mushroom risotto.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least one hour to allow its complex aromas to open. Serve at 17-18°C and consider cellaring further, as the 2015 vintage still shows considerable promise for extended ageing.
