Viniou Reviews

Roagna's Barolo "La Pira Vecchie Viti" 2017 is a magnificent expression of Nebbiolo, showcasing the exceptional potential of old vines in the heart of the Barolo appellation. Sourced from some of the oldest parcels in the La Pira vineyard, these venerable vines bestow great concentration and complexity to the wine. The 2017 vintage, shaped by a warm growing season, imbues the wine with ripe, expressive fruit yet maintains the hallmark finesse of Nebbiolo. Traditional vinification methods at Roagna—long macerations and ageing in large, old oak casks—further highlight the purity and depth of the wine, resulting in enchanting aromas of dark cherry, dried rose petals, tar, and subtle earthy undertones. On the palate, it unveils a structure of fine-grained tannins, lively acidity and a lingering, mineral finish.

Barolo hails from the Langhe hills in Piemonte, a region revered for winemaking since Roman times. The area's iconic marly-calcareous soils and gentle south-facing slopes provide ideal conditions for Nebbiolo. The region’s cool continental climate, with significant diurnal temperature shifts, encourages slow ripening and the development of complex aromatics and refined tannins. Barolo itself became a defined appellation in the mid-19th century and is celebrated worldwide for its ageworthy, nuanced wines. The La Pira vineyard is particularly prized for its elevation and old-vine heritage, translating into wines of distinction and longevity.

To truly honour this Barolo, pair it with richly flavoured dishes such as braised beef cheeks, wild mushroom risotto or classic tajarin pasta with white truffle. Piedmontese specialities like brasato al Barolo or agnolotti del plin elevate the local connection. Mature hard cheeses, particularly from cow’s milk, also complement the wine’s structure.

For optimal enjoyment, decant at least two hours before serving and present at 16-18°C. This will allow the wine's intricate bouquet and noble tannins to emerge fully, creating a memorable tasting experience either now or after further cellaring.
