Podere di San Bruno’s 2016 Barolo is a quintessential expression of both the Nebbiolo grape and the esteemed Barolo denomination. Crafted exclusively from Nebbiolo, this vintage emanates a compelling bouquet of wild cherries, dried violet petals, truffle and subtle hints of tobacco—aromas that continue to evolve beautifully as the wine breathes. The 2016 vintage in Barolo is renowned for its remarkable balance and ageing potential, offering both power and elegance. In the glass, you’ll note a deep garnet hue, with a palate marked by finely woven tannins, vibrant acidity and a lingering finish that hints at leather and earthy spice, all testaments to traditional vinification and patient maturation in oak barrels.
Barolo hails from the southern slopes of the Piemonte region in north-western Italy, an area steeped in winemaking heritage. The terroir is defined by rolling hills with calcareous marl soils, providing excellent drainage and minerality ideal for Nebbiolo. The climate is continental, blessed with warm summers and cold winters, with frequent morning mists fostering the slow maturation that Nebbiolo needs to develop complexity and grace. Barolo is often referred to as the “King of Wines,” and indeed, its historic significance and rigorous production standards have made it one of Italy’s most cherished regions.
This Barolo’s structure and aromatic depth lend themselves to classic Piemontese fare. It shines beside roast game, beef brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo itself), truffle-accented risottos or aged cheeses such as Castelmagno. Mushroom-based dishes, particularly with wild or porcini mushrooms, will complement the wine’s earthy nuances. Its intensity also means it can stand proudly next to rich, slow-cooked stews and savoury fonduta.
For the most rewarding experience, decant the wine at least an hour before drinking to allow its bouquet to unfurl. Serve at 17-18°C to maximise aromatic expression and mouthfeel. The 2016 Podere di San Bruno Barolo is a wine with ageing potential, but is already drinking beautifully with appropriate aeration.
