Bruno Giacosa’s 1997 Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto di Serralunga d’Alba is a masterclass in Nebbiolo, drawing its character from some of the finest plots in the heart of Piedmont. Made exclusively from the Nebbiolo grape, this vintage displays the opulence and full-bodied depth typical of a warm year, with refined tannins balanced by a remarkable core of fruit. The Le Rocche subzone, renowned for its optimal exposure and unique microclimate, imparts a distinctive energy to the wine, which in its maturity exhibits an extraordinary aromatic complexity—notes of dried rose petal, tar, truffle, and a potpourri of dried red fruits unfold, layered atop subtle spices and earthy, mineral undertones. Vinification with extended maceration and traditional large oak ageing adds structure and a graceful evolution over time.
Barolo hails from the Langhe hills in Piedmont, a region defined by continental climate with hot summers and foggy autumns, essential for the late-ripening Nebbiolo. The soils here are mostly calcareous marl, lending the wine its signature tension, longevity, and aromatic finesse. Steeped in tradition, the area around Serralunga d’Alba is famed for yielding robust and long-lived Barolos, revered worldwide and anchored in centuries of viticultural history.
This mature Barolo calls for elegant, flavourful dishes. Classic northern Italian pairings like rich veal osso buco, braised beef cheek, or wild mushroom risotto highlight the wine’s depth. Traditional tajarin pasta with white truffle or aged cheeses like Castelmagno will further complement its ethereal bouquet. The wine’s tannic frame and subtle earthiness harmonise beautifully with game birds or slow-roasted lamb as well.
To savour the full complexity of the 1997 Le Rocche del Falletto, decant gently for at least an hour before service. Serve at 17-18°C in large Burgundy glasses, which will allow the wine to express its layered aromas and silky palate. This is a Barolo at its graceful peak, promising a memorable gastronomic experience.
