Viniou Reviews

Bartolo Mascarello’s 2008 Barolo DOC Cuvée Riserva is an exemplary expression of Nebbiolo from one of the most esteemed names in the region. Crafted from meticulously tended vineyards in prime Barolo crus, this Riserva highlights the estate’s dedication to traditional vinification. Entirely produced from Nebbiolo, the wine undergoes a long maceration and is aged in large Slavonian oak casks, respecting the heritage of Barolo winemaking. The 2008 vintage benefited from a classic, cooler growing season, resulting in wines of particular freshness, refined tannins, and striking aromatic complexity. In the glass, this Barolo reveals a deep garnet hue and exudes aromas of dried violets, tar, rose petal, ripe cherry, and subtle earthy undertones. The palate is elegant yet persistent, with fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and layers of savoury fruit, truffle, and spice, promising further development with cellaring.

The Piedmont region, nestled in northwestern Italy, is famed for its undulating hills, misty mornings, and calcareous marl soils, especially around the villages of Barolo itself. This terroir, in combination with the continental climate—marked by cold winters, hot summers, and significant diurnal temperature variation—imparts Nebbiolo with its signature intensity, aromatic lift, and ability to age gracefully. The history of Barolo is steeped in tradition, with families like the Mascarellos at the forefront of preserving authentic winemaking practices and producing wines of remarkable personality and longevity.

Pairing the Barolo Riserva 2008 invites a celebration of Piedmontese cuisine. Its power and elegance make it a perfect match for dishes such as braised veal cheek in a Barolo reduction, tajarin al tartufo (hand-cut egg pasta with black truffle), or a traditional beef brasato. Mature cheeses like Castelmagno or aged Parmigiano also highlight the wine’s savoury notes and counterbalance its tannic structure.

For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine at least one hour prior to serving to allow it to fully express its bouquet and depth. Serve at a temperature of 17-18°C. This Barolo Riserva is already showing superbly, but will continue to evolve with grace for another decade or more in a properly managed cellar.
