Viniou Reviews

Roagna's Barolo Pira Vecchie Vigne 2007 is an exceptional expression of Nebbiolo, crafted from some of the oldest vines in the esteemed Pira cru. Situated in the heart of Barolo, Roagna remains one of the Piemonte’s most respected, traditionalist houses, focusing on low yields and extended maceration to extract the true character of the terroir. The 2007 vintage brought an early, warm growing season, resulting in wines of pronounced structure and opulence. This wine offers classic notes of dried cherry, rose petal, truffle, and balsamic, further enriched by the wisdom of old vines, which add profound complexity and length.

The Barolo DOC laps the rolling hills of Piemonte, a region celebrated for its foggy mornings and dramatic diurnal temperature variations, ideal for Nebbiolo. The soils are mainly clay-limestone, providing excellent drainage and mineral depth, which crucially influence the region's powerful yet deeply nuanced reds. Piemonte’s wine culture dates back to Roman times, later refined by centuries-old noble families. Barolo, often called "the King of Wines and the Wine of Kings," showcases this proud heritage, offering supreme ageability and depth.

Given the intensity and structure of Roagna's Vecchie Vigne, this wine excels alongside equally refined dishes. Traditional Piedmontese cuisine pairs marvellously: think of braised beef cheeks with Barolo sauce, tajarin pasta with white truffle, or wild mushroom risotto. Slow-cooked lamb or aged hard cheeses like Castelmagno would also provide an exquisite match, allowing the wine's layers to unfold around robust, earthy flavours.

A Barolo of this calibre deserves thoughtful service. Decant well in advance—two to three hours prior is recommended—to allow the bouquet and palate to fully express the tertiary aromas and silken tannins. Serve at a temperature between 17-18°C to best appreciate both the aromatic subtlety and the vigorous structure typical of old-vine Nebbiolo.
