Viniou Reviews

Giuseppe Mascarello’s Barolo Monprivato 2004 is an exceptional expression of Nebbiolo, the noble grape of Piedmont. This wine hails from a single famed vineyard, Monprivato, located in the heart of Castiglione Falletto, and is regarded as one of the great crus of the appellation. The 2004 vintage was particularly favourable, marked by a long and even growing season that permitted full development of the Nebbiolo grapes’ complex aromatic and tannic structure. Traditional vinification methods are employed, with extended maceration and maturation in large Slavonian oak casks, which fosters an elegant and age-worthy wine. In the glass, it reveals a remarkable interplay of aromas: wild cherry, rose petal, dried herbs, tar, and truffle, all supported by firm but refined tannins and a lingering, mineral-driven finish.

The Barolo DOC region occupies the Langhe hills in southern Piedmont. Here, the continental climate enjoys a balance of warm summers and misty autumns, allowing Nebbiolo’s slow ripening and nuanced flavour development. Calcareous marl and clay soils, particularly in Monprivato, imbue the wines with remarkable structure and a unique, perfumed signature. The area’s viticultural history stretches back centuries, with Barolo often referred to as “the king of wines and the wine of kings” due to its regal profile and association with the local aristocracy.

Such a regal Barolo pairs beautifully with hearty Piedmontese cuisine. Local dishes like braised beef in Barolo sauce (brasato al Barolo), rich veal ragù tajarin, or delicate truffle risottos are natural companions. Mature cheeses, such as Castelmagno or aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, also highlight the wine’s complexity, while earthy mushroom or game-based dishes play into its savoury notes.

For optimal enjoyment, decant this wine for at least two hours to allow the tertiary aromas to unfurl. Serve at 17-18°C in large glasses to showcase its aromatic breadth. The 2004 Monprivato still holds excellent cellaring potential but is now reaching an exquisite stage of maturity for connoisseurs seeking depth and grace.
