The 1996 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Monfortino Riserva is a truly iconic wine, emblematic of both the Barolo DOC and the heights Nebbiolo can reach. Crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grapes, this legendary cuvée comes from the renowned Monforte d'Alba area and is only produced in exceptional years. The 1996 vintage is notable for its classic character and longevity, with careful vinification methods rooted in tradition: long maceration periods and extensive ageing—often surpassing seven years in large Slavonian oak barrels—culminate in a wine of immense depth and structure. Expect a nose that is both profound and evolving, with dark cherry, dried rose, truffle, leather and a hint of tar. On the palate, it is powerful yet poised, marked by vibrant acidity, formidable tannins and an extraordinary capacity for ageing.
Situated in the north of Italy, the Piemonte (Piedmont) region is famed for its mist-shrouded hills, where Nebbiolo flourishes in calcareous clay soils. The appellation of Barolo is often referred to as the “King of Wines and the Wine of Kings”, a nod to its rich history stretching back to the 19th century, when the aristocracy embraced it as a wine of stature. The local climate, with marked seasonal variations and autumnal fog (la nebbia, from which Nebbiolo gets its name), allows for the slow maturation of the grape, developing complexity and tannic backbone essential for long-lived wines.
Pair this noble Barolo with traditional Piemontese fare for a transcendent experience: braised beef cheek (brasato al Barolo), wild mushroom risotto or agnolotti del plin filled with veal. Rich game such as venison or roasted duck, and mature hard cheeses like Castelmagno, are also perfect partners. The wine’s structure and earthiness call for robust, savoury dishes that can match its intensity.
For optimal enjoyment, decant at least two hours in advance to allow its aromas to blossom fully. Serve in large-bowled glasses at 18°C to 20°C. Although already showing great development, this 1996 Monfortino Riserva will reward further cellaring, with peak drinking likely spanning several decades yet.
