Viniou Reviews

Roccheviberti’s Barolo DOCG 2020, Cuvée Rocche di Castiglione, is a quintessential expression of Nebbiolo from one of Piedmont’s most revered vineyard crus. The wine is crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grapes, hand-harvested from the famed Rocche di Castiglione vineyard, renowned for producing Barolo of exceptional finesse and complexity. 2020 was a balanced vintage, defined by steady ripening and favourable late-season conditions, resulting in wines of excellent aromatic clarity and firm but approachable tannins. Fermentation typically proceeds in stainless steel, followed by extended maceration and traditional maturation in large Slavonian oak casks, a technique that preserves Nebbiolo’s distinctive perfume while enhancing structure and longevity.

The Barolo region, nestled in the rolling hills south of Alba, is famous for its ancient marl and sandstone soils, which impart unique mineral nuances and lift to the wines. The region benefits from a continental climate, experiencing hot summers and foggy autumns, ideal for Nebbiolo’s slow maturation and late harvest. Barolo is steeped in history and tradition, having earned its moniker as the “King of Wines and the Wine of Kings.” Vineyards such as Rocche di Castiglione are particularly esteemed for their ideal eastern and southern exposures and their ability to produce wines that combine power and elegance.

With its powerful structure, refined tannins, and complex aromas—think rose petal, cherry, tar, and truffle—this Barolo pairs beautifully with robust dishes. Classic Piedmontese fare, such as brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo), tajarin with white truffle, or agnolotti del plin, will enhance the wine’s savoury depth. It also stands up well to slow-cooked lamb, wild mushroom risotto, and aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Castelmagno.

For optimal enjoyment, decant this Barolo for at least 1-2 hours before serving to reveal its full aromatic panorama. The ideal serving temperature is between 16-18°C, which allows the wine’s aromatic complexity and fine tannic structure to unfold gracefully in the glass.
